Messier 58 (M 58)

Introduction | Map | My Own Photos | Own Observations | References

On this page I collect my observations of the barred spiral galaxy M 58 (NGC 4579) in the constellation Virgo.

Introduction

According to Karkoschka, the bar of the barred spiral galaxy M 58 in the constellation Virgo should be just about visible in the telescope. In the eVscope, I found the bar hard to recognize. In the Vespera, the galaxy is too small anyway... In the Vespera Pro, I see a bar!

The four Messier galaxies M 58, M 87, M 89, and M 90 form a triangle in my Vespera mosaic (see below) with a bright dot in the center. M 58 is the lower left edge of the triangle (in my Vespera mosaic).

M 58 can also be photographed together with NGC 4567/68 (Butterfly Galaxies) in the Vespera Pro. On a Vespera Pro photo there are also the galaxies NGC 4528 (barred lenticular), NGC 4554 (not existant), NGC 4564, as well as a lot of galaxies from the IC catalogue.
