Messier 24 (M 24)

Introduction | Map | Find/Identify | My Own Photos | My Own Observations | References

On this page I collect my observations of the Small Sagittarius Cloud M 24 in the constellation Sagittarius, which is actually a hole in the Milky Way.

Introduction

The Small Sagittarius Cloud M 24 is located in the constellation Sagittarius and is not a physical object, but rather a 1.5° * 0.5° large "window" or tunnel in the dust clouds of the Milky Way that allows us to see toward the galactic center. Stars up to 15,000 light-years away can be seen here (Messier Guide, modified).

Embedded in M 24 are the open star cluster NGC 6603 and the dark nebulae B 92 and B 93. Next to B 93, there is also the small open star cluster Cr 469.

Find/Identify

Find: M 24 is located below M 17 and M 18. Simply move down from M 17 (nebula glow) and M 18 along the Milky Way to find M 24.

Identify: If you found M 17 with its nebula glow and move down beyond M 18 you can be fairly sure to have found M 24.
